Getting to know Jonny Gusman


Jonny has recently graduated year 12 at Woolgoolga High school and is now spending a year or two working before he moves to Canberra to train along side his brother Jordan, under the guidance of Coach Dick Telford.

Recently we sat down with 18 Year old Corindi Beach local Jonny Gusman to chat about running, shoes, coffee and a lot of other interesting stuff.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Corindi beach, which is a small coastal town just north of Coffs Harbour, NSW.

Who are you currently coached by?

I am currently coached by my Dad as well as Dick Telford via correspondence.

What club do you run for?

At the moment i run for Asics West, in Sydney.

What Events do you specialise in?

I run the 800m and 1500m.

And what are your Current personal bests?

800: 2.01

1500: 4.19

Current titles or most recent placings:

800m Silver Medal (All-Schools 2016).

When, why and how did you get involved in athletics?

I got involved with athletics at about the age of 6 as my older brother and sister both did it.

What is your greatest athletic achievement:

Winning the silver medal at the Trans Tasman championships for high jump.

Do you prefer training with a squad or alone? Why?

I prefer training with a squad.

It's more enjoyable and it makes it easier training in groups due to factors such as wind resistance and being able to push each other."

Favourite post training food?

A banana.

Fave type of Coffee?

Flat white

What are you doing when your not training?

Taking photos or playing playstation

Favourite running session?

400m reps.

Hardest session you’ve ever done?

Probably would have to be 800m reps

Have you ever thrown up during training?

No.

Fave Running shoe?

Saucony Zealot Iso.

Fave movie?

Either the Rocky or Rambo series.

Who did you look up to as a kid?

Usain Bolt

Who do you look up to now?

Matt Centowitz

Fav TV show?

Suits

Fav sport other than Athletics?

Soccer, Rugby League, or Basketball.

Do you have any pets?

2 Dogs named Bolt and Willis.

What advice would you give to young kids who want to achieve their sporting dreams?

If you put in 100%, nothing is out of reach.

Favourite track and field athlete?

Mo Farah.

Favourite athlete from another sport?

Kyrie Irving from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Fav thing to have for breakfast?

Milo Cereal or Peanut Butter Toast.

Jonny's next event on the calendar is the 5.7km race at the Gold Coast Marathon on the 1st of July.
